Transporting transformers

Power transformers are among the heaviest single pieces moved by road. They usually travel without oil, gas-filled and without attachments such as radiators or bushings. The manufacturer specifies how they are lifted, secured and monitored.

What matters

Heavy and compact
The weight is concentrated on a small area – vehicle and route must carry it.
Manufacturer requirements
Lifting points, support and permitted accelerations are in the transport specification.
Impact recorder
An impact recorder often travels along, recording loads – provided by the manufacturer.
Attachments separate
Radiators, bushings and conservators travel as separate packages.

Planning questions

We clarify these points before quoting – the earlier they are known, the more precise the plan.

  1. How heavy is the transformer in transport condition?
  2. What are its dimensions without attachments?
  3. Are there manufacturer transport requirements?
  4. How is unloading done at the substation?
  5. How many attachments travel separately?

What we need from you

  • Weight and dimensions in transport condition
  • Loading and unloading point
  • Time window
  • Number of attachments

Preparation: You hand over the cargo ready for loading with known lifting points – dismantling, assembly and foundation work are handled by your team or your installation partner.

What we do for you

What we organise

  • Feasibility check per project with questions on missing values
  • Coordination of permits, escort vehicles, route surveys and lifting equipment via partners
  • Quote with the agreed scope once the transport can be planned

Good to know

Agree the delivery time with manufacturer or grid operator – then filling, assembly and testing can follow straight away.

How it works

  1. 01

    Request

You state the cargo, dimensions and weight per piece with units, rough route and time window – marking anything unknown.

  2. 02

    Review

We check weight, route, unloading point and manufacturer requirements and clarify vehicle, permit and lifting with partners.

  3. 03

    Quote

After the feasibility check you receive a quote with the agreed scope, including partner services.

  4. 04

    Execution

Transport after permit, unloading with lifting equipment or skidding via partners.

Questions and answers: Transformers

Are transformers transported with oil?

Large power transformers usually travel without oil and gas-filled. The manufacturer's requirements apply.

How is a transformer unloaded at the substation?

Depending on site by crane or skidding – organised via partners and coordinated with the grid operator.

What does an impact recorder record?

Accelerations during transport. The manufacturer usually evaluates it.
